Bagels. Bagels are a favorite breakfast of mine. Since I love them so much I thought I would try making them. I found this recipe from a Japanese vlogger named Mocha on YouTube. Feel free to go look him up and check out his videos. He has lots of small batch baking videos which are great if you are just baking for 1-2 people and don’t want tons of leftovers. Anyway, back to bagels. Delicious, soft, chewy, fresh and perfect for breakfast, brunch, lunch sandwiches, etc. Slathered with tons of cream cheese like they do in New York, honey butter, or made into sandwiches, they are great any way you want to try them. Get creative with your toppings. The recipe if fairly simple, it just takes a little more effort than pour and stir. 😉 But it is pretty cool to be able to make your own fresh bagels at home. This is my first try with this recipe, so I hope I get better at it and make “prettier” bagels in the future.
Ingredients
Yields 5 bagels.
- 1 3/4 cup + 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 1/3 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp yeast
- 3/4 cup water
Instructions
- Mix salt and flour together in a medium bowl.
- In a separate bowl mix sugar and yeast in warm water.
- Mix it all together.
- Knead and cover. Let rest 30 minutes.
- Separate into 5 equal pieces. Roll out into rounds, roll up and rest for 10 minutes.
- Flatten rolls, pinch seam together and roll into long rope. Shape into bagels by flattening one end and wrap it around the other and pinch dough to seal the seam.
- Boil for 30 seconds on each side in a skillet with just enough water to come up half way and a tsp of honey mixed into the water.
- Place of baking sheet or stone.
- Bake 450F for 15 minutes.
- Enjoy!
